The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Hills, is a 1600 km long mountain range on the west coast of India. It includes the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Covering an area of about 140,000 square miles [140,000 sq km], these mountains are rich in flora and fauna. These hills intersect at Falghat for 30 km (Palghat Gap). About 60% of the Western Ghats is in Karnataka.
Anaimudi Peak is the highest peak at 2695 m. The Western Ghats was declared an Ecologically Sensitive Area and declared an Ecological Hotspot in 1988.
